I'm trying to figure out how you got the thumb-printy textures in the first one... with Photoshop. o.o

Its not really planned out to look specifically thumb-printy; I'm mostly having fun trying to combine things. It's easier for me to experiment with stuff in photoshop because you can always hit undo or hide a layer, so I've been trying to combine lots of different brush shapes and layers.

I'm kind of trying to imitate the way Craig Mullins and other artists on the Sijun forums can get so much texture in their work. That guy's my hero.

Wow, these are really beautiful. Very expressionistic and emotional. Are those special brushes or filters you've applied? Great stuff.

geez.. gorgeous! I'm curious as to what tools you use in Painter as well. I love the first one and the lion creature, plus the speed lines in the later ones.

I really like the way you use painter! I want to know which tools you use!
I'm still not really comforable using it... I keep wanting to be able to customize brushes and understand how they work, but so far I'm just frustrated with the brush creator. I usually just end up using the smeary flat, the big square chalk pastel, and the palette knife.
Long-belated congratulations on Cascadia's webcomics award. I'm looking forward to seeing King Grisly-beard in San Diego.

Naw, I like your more painterly and textured look better. Mine tend to look too plastic. Anyway, I use the smeary round brush in the "brush" tools, with painter 6.1. Haven't figured out how to make my own brushes, but smeary round works ok.
I'll be sure to save a copy of the comic for you =)
